AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes

AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

Beautiful Fractures, Beautiful Faults

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Lovely view from the top of Arthurs Seat, Mornington Peninsula
~
The Mornington Peninsula is on the Selwyn Fault line which travels north toward the Tyabb Fault line. Arthurs Seat mountain sits right on the Selwyn Fault. Mild earthquakes may be experienced in the area. For more information on earthquake activity and Australian plate tectonics, see "Predicting the Earthquake" in The Age, April 18, 2005. N.B. Australia sits on the Indo-Australian tectonic plate and is moving north at 6.5 centimetres a year, faster than any other continent. The plate is also pushing under the Euro-Asian plate, causing huge stresses that can cause earthquakes - and tsunamis. [op.cit.]

What a beautiful tribute to your favorite place, Arthur's Seat. I wish I could visit there. Your pictures are so interesting. As for your poem I enjoyed it very much. The expressionism you share is astounding. I wish, though, that earthquakes wouldn't disturb our favorite places in the world. But, I guess we have to accept these as we do the beauty. Nice job. Have a nice day.

Beautiful ocean vista, in spite of the treachery that dwells beneath. We have a MAJOR faultline about 350miles from us, the New Madrid faultline, sitting under major cities like St. Louis and Nashville. It made the Mississippi River run backwards the last time it rumbled in the late 1800's. Scarey stuff, but it's the Yellowstone National Park that scares me, when she blows it will be devistating for the world.

I lived for years near active fault lines. Earthquakes have never caused me much concern. This is a lovely poem that speaks of a creation formed from breaking things apart. Very nice.
