Tavistock House

Somehow the signs on this lovely old building in Melbourne don't seem to fit, don't seem right.
Tavistock House Past Names : Norfolk Hotel (1866), Ship Inn Hotel (1836)
It used to be a Coffee Palace and is now heritage listed.
Tavistock House was built for John Tighe as a hotel circa 1850. The architect was Samuel Marlow.
The building was extensively altered and extended during the nineteenth century.
In 1906 it was renovated again, giving its present Edwardian Freestyle form with Art Nouveau detailing.

First Governor General

This is a bronze statue (unveiled in 1911) of the First Governor General of Australia.
He arrived from Scotland as John Adrian Lewis Hope, the Earl of Hopetoun.
At first, he was a popular governor of Victoria from 1889-95.
He went back to Scotland and then returned to Australia as the first Governor General 1901-2.
At the end of his not so popular term, (he enjoyed spending money), he became the Marquis of Linlithgow.

Moonraker

Moonraker is a boat that takes small groups of people out into Port Phillip Bay in search of seals and dolphins.
You also get the opportunity to swim with them and to explore marine reefs.
In the above photo, the boat is docked at Sorrento in early morning light.

Heart of a Poppy

On 11th November it will be Remembrance Day.
It is the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War 1.
The day now represents all those who died or have suffered from war or conflict.
This year is not only the 95th anniversary of the armistice on 11 November which ended the First World War, but also the 20th anniversary of the reinterment of the Unknown Australian Soldier in the Australian War Memorial’s Hall of Memory. To mark the significant occasion, this year’s Remembrance Day Commemorative Address will be delivered by former Australian Prime Minister, the Hon Paul Keating, who delivered the poignant eulogy of the Unknown Australian Soldier in 1993.
- extract from the Australian War Memorial website.

Traditionally, poppies are associated with this day.
Red poppies were among the first plants to spring up
in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium.
I decided that this year I would post a more intimate view of a poppy.

Nature's Secret Swirls

It was raining again, and I was desperate to take photos.
I wandered on my verandah and noticed that leaves fallen there from the winds
seemed to be surrounded by small "mounds" of water; almost like water embossed on water.
So I took photos to see what this would look like in macro.
Here is the result.
It's not a reflection but is it a refraction?
